White House launches ‘media bias’ tracker targeting news outlets
The tracker, launched on Friday under the banner “Misleading. Biased. Exposed.,” is part of President Donald Trump’s ongoing campaign against what he calls the “fake news media,” a term he uses for coverage he considers inaccurate or antagonistic.
"The site is intended to serve as a 'record of the media’s false and misleading stories flagged by the White House,'" the administration stated.
The webpage lists weekly examples of disputed reporting, linking to the original articles and categorizing them as “Misrepresentation,” “Omission of context,” “Bias,” or “Malpractice.” CBS News, The Boston Globe, and The Independent were among the first to appear in the “Media Offender of the Week” section for stories the administration claimed “misrepresent and exaggerate President Trump’s calls for Democrat accountability,” particularly coverage implying he urged the “execution” of lawmakers.
An “Offender Hall of Shame” section compiles dozens of entries, including The Washington Post, CBS News, CNN, and MSNBC.
The launch follows controversy over edited footage in a BBC Panorama documentary, Trump: A Second Chance?, which aired before last year’s US election. The program spliced a 2021 speech to suggest Trump incited the January 6 Capitol riot. The broadcaster later issued a formal apology after Trump threatened a $1 billion defamation lawsuit.
Several US outlets, including CBS and ABC News, have recently settled lawsuits filed by Trump.
He has repeatedly accused major networks of left-leaning bias, claiming they spread falsehoods to undermine his presidency.
After being included as a “repeat offender,” The Washington Post stated it remained “proud of its accurate, rigorous journalism,” as noted in reports.
